Text: Arnold Schoenberg
116 N. Rockingham Ave.
Los Angeles 49, California.

April 25, 1951

Mr. Walter Hinrichsen
President
C.F. Peters Edition
881 Seventh Ave.
New York 19, N.Y.

Dear Mr. Hinrichsen:
I am very sorry that the Phantasy produces so much trouble. These were mistakes from many sides, with the exeption of myself.
It is very generous of you to reengrave the whole thing, but I would not employ the same engraver. Still, the best engraver makes errors with my music. Accordingly, also the new engraving must be proofread carefully.
The title should be so as Mr. Koldofsky gave it, except Fantasie should be spelled PHANTSY. The addition, with accompaniment of the piano belos the title, int he second line thus:
PHATASY FOR VIOLIN
WITH ACCOMPANIMENT OF THE PIANO
The note concerning Koldofsky's first performance should be either in the third line, or as you suggested, on page 2.
In membory of Adolph Koldofsky who played the first performance of the Phantasy on September 13, 1949, given in honor of Arnold Schoenberg's 75th birthday.
I am very sorry about the editor, Mr. Watson Forbes, who seems to be a very fine musician. But in the case of the Phantasy he overlooked the one fact, that I myself know exactly how to write for violin besides which some experts answered problems.
Very important is that my way of notation of the harmonics must be preserved, as I wrote them.
Let me tell you that I am also proud about my reappearance in Beters[!] Edition. Let us hope we have more luck with the new edition of the Five Orchestra Pieces. I am very glad that our relations have now become as friendly as when we started.
Many cordial greetings,
Sincerely yours,

R.H.
