| Abstract: | Author, abridged: "A discussion of Schoenberg's activity, 1895-1900,
as director of workers' choruses--part of the Austrian worker-singer movement founded by Joseph Scheu. Two documents in the Pierpont Morgan Library pertaining to this little-known phase in the composer's life are published for the first time: a letter (25 July 1895) concerning political aesthetics and an unfinished work for male chorus and winds, 'Aus den Flüchtlingssonetten vom Jahre 1849 von Ludwig Pfau,' dated 24 June 1897. The author demonstrates that Schoenberg's choir directorships were an expression of his political-musical interests, and not undertaken because of financial need." |
