| Note: | "Why is Schoenberg's music so easy to absolutize?" |
| Abstract: | Tibor Tallián, abridged: "Attempts to suggest the true significance
of Schoenberg's music for the 20th c., and opposes the Schoenberg circle and T.W. Adorno in their tendency to absolutize Schoenberg's work. Argues that Schoenberg was intimately bound to the specifically Viennese evolution of music, as may be seen particularly in his characterlessness in his themes, his use of Viennes Trivialmusik, his absolute denial of the possibility of a new tonality, his use of neutral timbres, and the prose qualities of his music. Schoenberg is the representative classic figure of the first half of the 20th c." |
